Effingham County board members Tuesday approved two measures to support local businesses through the Downstate Small Business Stabilization Program.

Each of the three businesses...Spectrum Screen Graphics, Goebel Equipment, and Country Haven Event Center...is seeking $25,000 in grant funds through the program. The grant program involves Federal funds, but is administered by the State through the County. The County is incurring some risk with the program, as it could be on the hook to pay back the grant funds if the businesses don't do their part.

The other measure approved Tuesday was to seek grant funds for improvements to about 1,000 feet of Airport Road, east from US Route 45. The roadway would be improved to the new home of Hetzel Overland Transport, to be developed on property now owned by the Genaust family.

Board member Heather Mumma did not attend the meeting; John Perry joined by phone.
