A crash on the north side of Effingham on Route 45 at the 162 Interstate ramps occurred at approximately 10:00 this morning.

A pickup pulling a flatbed trailer coming off the interstate turned south and made contact with a northbound semi and took out its fuel tanks. Both vehicles caught fire and diesel fuel spilled into the interstate ditch and caught fire. The impact caused one of the vehicles to hit another semi on the scene and knocked the axle out from under the cab of that third unit. The fuel in the ditch was allowed to burn itself up so the ditch didn't have to be diked.

No one was injured.

Effingham Fire Department, Effingham Police Department, State Police, IDOT, Heartland and Tri-Power Towing were all called to the scene. The 162 on and off-ramps were each closed as was Route 45 in both directions  All roadways were back open as the scene was cleared at 12:30 pm
