Two people were hospitalized after a crash east of Effingham Thursday morning.

The crash was reported at 7:48am on Illinois Route 33 on the curve just east of the Teutopolis/Elliotstown Road. The crash scene is about 4-1/2 miles east of Effingham.

Illinois State Police report a car driven by 23-year-old Nathan Humphrey of Midlothian, Virginia, slowed to a stop due to a vehicle in front of him that was waiting to turn left off the highway onto 1300th Avenue. A following car driven by 58-year-old Carolyn Harris of Sesser failed to slow down and struck the rear of the Humphrey vehicle. Harris' car then veered left into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a semi driven by 54-year-old Steven Clary of Olney. The impact sent the Harris vehicle off the highway and into a field to the north.

Police say both Harris and Humphrey were injured in the crash. Harris was airlifted from the scene to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Humphrey was transported to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Harris was cited for improper lane usage.

Teutopolis Fire Protection District firefighters assisted at the scene with extrication of Harris from her vehicle.

Route 33 was closed to traffic for about 20 minutes after the crash.
