Plane Has to Land on I-57

State police in southern Illinois are investigating an incident Monday night where an airplane landed on I-57.

The incident occurred at 8:28pm at Mile Post 5 near Cairo. Police report a Cessna 150 airplane occupied by two pilots was on approach to land at Cairo Airport when the pilot experienced loss of power or engine failure. 

The pilot made an emergency landing onto the roadway.

The occupants were uninjured and the aircraft was not damaged as a result of the landing.

I-57 in the area of the incident was limited to one lane of traffic for approximately 2-1/2 hours. The aircraft was safely towed from the roadway and the FAA is investigating the incident.
