Sunshine and blue skies greeted those gathered on the lawn of the old Courthouse Saturday morning for the dedication of the expanded and renovated Effingham County Veterans Memorial.

John Schimmelpfenning served as Master of Ceremonies for the event that featured music by the FACE Community Orchestra and the St. Anthony's Men's Choir, an invocation and benediction by Reverend Lawrence Beebe, and a speech by retired US Army Col. Lonnie Jansen.  A firing squad and the playing of "Taps" and a Call to Colors by Glen "Lip" Lewis completed the day's activities.

Chris Thies who, with wife Teresa, spearheaded the volunteer effort to the renovate and expand the Memorial, said they are still about $58,000 short of paying off the project.  He can be contacted either at home or at the Effingham American Legion Post Home if you'd like to make a contribution.
