Proposals to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines passed in an Illinois State Senate committee Wednesday, but not without debate.

Republican senators argued the bans won't prevent mass shootings like those in Newtown, Connecticut and Aurora, Colorado.  Other opponents say there's a major flaw in the proposal to ban magazines because those devices don't have serial numbers.  They say that will make it very difficult to track who owns the magazines in the event of a crime.  The full Senate is expected to debate and vote on the bills today.

Local State Senator Kyle McCarter promises he'll vote No on the legislation.  McCarter said, "I will do everything in my power, including my vote, to protect the Second Amendment.  Criminals will always have access to guns.  Law-abiding citizens need every opportunity to protect themselves, their families and their property from those who would seek to harm them."
