Cowden-Herrick school board members discussed, but took no action, on issues including student memorials, protests and cell phones in school buildings.

There was no discussion, though, on a possible 8th grade graduation at the end of the school year.

The Board heard from Cowden-Herrick student and Shelby County CEO participant Marshall Nohren on his project known as "Elmwood Energy" designed to lower electric costs at the Herrick school building. It was also voted to purchase a super wand metal detector and to buy and install security cameras in both school vans.

Board members approved registration for the next school year in the Illinois Elementary School Association, approved a senior class trip to St. Louis on May 11 and approved an 8th grade class trip to Six Flags on May 18.

The Board hired Devin Friesland as fulltime second shift custodian as of May 29, hired Madonna Shellenbarger as summer custodial help, and accepted the resignation of Andy Nohren as librarian and aide at the end of the school year.
