A couple of local men organized a last-minute opportunity Wednesday to ring bells to remember the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Scott Ealy and Bill Passalacqua rang bells at the Courthouse at 6:05pm. That effort followed the start of bells being rung at 6:01pm at the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, and then the ringing of bells throughout Memphis beginning at 6:03pm.

Bells were rung at Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham at 6:05pm, and then the effort began at the Courthouse. Ealy admitted it was a last-minute plan, but sincere, nonetheless. The bells at Centenary were rung 39 times, in recognition of Dr. King's age when he died.

Ealy has been involved in promoting civil rights and racial harmony since his days as a student in Jackson, Mississippi.

Wednesday was the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King in Memphis.
