The Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday granted variances in the size and height of billboards to be erected along Illinois Route 33, just east of Sandschafer Electric.

The odd-shaped parcel of land can't be used for anything else, according to Tony Sandschafer, who owns the parcel. The variances will allow a larger-than-normal pair of billboard signs to be placed there.

Sandschafer said the signs, to be placed by D&D Signs, will be lighted, but the lighting will be directed onto the signs and would not be a hindrance to passing motorists.
