Reis Joins in Override of Governor's Veto on Guns

State Representative David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) today joined the House of Representatives in overriding the Governor’s veto measure banning semi-automatic firearms.

“The Governor is determined to make upholding your Second Amendment a felony in the State of Illinois,” Rep. Reis said. “Quinn’s anti-gun addition to a common sense measure was not only unconstitutional but would have killed a common sense pro-business bill allowing citizens in Illinois to finally be able to purchase ammunition online from Illinois companies.”

Governor Quinn rewrote an NRA-backed ammunition purchase measure into an assault weapons ban. The original legislation, Senate Bill 681, allowed Illinois residents with a valid
FOID Card to purchase ammunition by mail from in-state dealers.

“With more than $7.1 billion in unpaid bills, $90 billion in unfunded pension liability and unstoppable spending habits of Chicago Democrats, our Governor needs to stop threatening our Second Amendment rights and focus his executive powers on getting Illinois on stable financial ground,” Rep. Reis said.

Rep. Reis continued, “This is only the beginning of Quinn’s assault on our right to bear arms.
With upcoming Democrat veto-proof majorities in both chambers, it’s critical all supporters of
the Second Amendment, from gun enthusiasts to sportsmen, to contact their elected officials and voice their support of their gun rights.”

Last week, the Senate overwhelmingly voted 49-4 to reject the Governor’s veto language to ban the sale or possession of semi-automatic rifles, high-capacity magazines and .50-caliber guns sending the measure to the house for approval.

The original legislation (HB 681), without the assault weapon ban, will now become law.
