A student was wounded in a shooting late Wednesday morning at Mattoon High School.

The shooting occurred just after 11:30am in the cafeteria.

According to a Facebook post by Mattoon School District, high school officials were made aware of an active student shooter. The School Resource Officers and school officials headed to the cafeteria where they heard shots fired. The suspect was then subdued and disarmed. As a result of shots being fired, one student was wounded.

First responders arrived, secured the facility, and transported the student to the hospital. The injured student's parents were notified.

High school students were transferred to Riddle Elementary School where they could be picked up by parents. The other schools in the Mattoon district finished out the school day under "soft lockdown" status.

The Facebook post reads, "We are saddened that this event has happened and we will provide counseling to students in need. We will continue to work with emergency personnel to determine what happened.

"We appreciate the quick response of school staff and first responders. Most importantly, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the injured student and all who are affected by this tragedy.'

No word yet on the identity of the wounded student or their condition. The identity of the person taken into custody has not been released.

Mattoon High School students will be able to pick up their vehicles from the high school after 5pm. Due to the ongoing investigation, the public will not be allowed into the buildings at the high school. Students may pick up their belongings Thursday.

Now, Mattoon High School will operate on an early dismissal schedule Thursday. The high school will be dismissed at 12:09pm. Lunch will not be served at the high school. All other Mattoon school buildings will have regularly scheduled hours.

Parents of any district student who wish to keep their children at home will be given excused absences.

Counselors, clergy and police officers will be available for students and staff members to provide comfort and counseling.
