The interstates through Effingham at times looked like parking lots Monday night as thousands headed home following the viewing of the eclipse in southern Illinois.

Almost as many people seemed to exit the interstate at every opportunity to travel the two-lane highways, but traffic was just as heavy on those roadways. Traffic on Illinois 37 was backed up from the Watson T west and south through Watson until late Monday night.

Meanwhile, every motel room in Effingham was taken, a situation that was seen as far north as Champaign.

Dave Zerrusen of Teutopolis tweeted Monday night that his three-hour trip home from Makanda took seven hours to complete.
