Effingham City Plan Commission has given its approval to a site plan for the Meijer store to be built in Effingham.

The plan for the almost 160,000-square-foot store was approved subject to a roadway plan for the intersection of Ford Avenue and Oak Point Drive. Oak Point is the roadway leading into Kohl's and planned to provide access to Meijer. The plan is to include a turn lane to provide access off Ford onto Oak Point. Some drainage work also remains before construction can begin.

City Engineer Jeremy Heuerman said construction is still set to begin in 2018 as was discussed when the project was announced, with the store opening in 2019.

The Plan Commission also discussed an update of land use maps for the city. Heuerman said the maps illustrate how the City wants areas to develop; residential, commercial or industrial. He said the maps were last updated in 2005, and a lot has happened since then. The goal is to hold a public hearing on the maps ahead of next week's City Council meeting on August 15 at 5:30pm at City Hall.
