The Illinois Senate Tuesday passed a hike in the state income tax.

The measure passed by a 32 to 26 margin with every Republican member of the Senate voting No.

Here are comments by local State Senator Dale Righter of Mattoon on the floor of the Senate on the decision...

Senate Bill 9 raises the state income tax rate back to nearly where it was after the last income tax hike in 2011.

State Senator Kyle McCarter also spoke against the proposal on the Senate floor Tuesday...

Senate Bill 9 increases the individual income tax rate to 4.95% from the current rate of 3.75% and the corporate income tax rate will increase to 7% from 5.25%. The measure also imposes a 6.25% tax on tattooing and body piercing and new taxes of 6% on satellite and streaming services. Other taxes are to be worked out through the Legislature's rule making process.
