An Altamont teenager was killed Saturday morning when struck by a train. Killed in the accident was 17-year old Cain "Alex" Alexander Daugherty of Altamont.

Daugherty was struck by a train while walking on the CSX tracks just east of Altamont sometime around 11am Saturday morning. There are reports that the Daugherty, who lived near where the incident occurred, was walking on the tracks and wearing headphones so apparently did not hear the warning signal sounded by the train's engineer.

A helicopter was summoned to the scene at one point, but was sent back to base before it landed. Altamont city police and firefighters and the Effingham County sheriff's deputies assisted the Effingham County Coroner's Office at the scene.

The sheriff's department and the Coroner's office are continuing to investigate the incident.

(AUTHORITIES HAD TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE SCENE BY DRIVING ALONG THE RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY AT THE EDGE OF A WOODED AREA AT THE EAST EDGE OF ALTAMONT)
