Republican Kyle McCarter won re-election Tuesday to the Illinois Senate, defeating Democrat Danny Stover by about 20,000 votes.

McCarter will take over the 54th Senate District after redistricting, having represented the 51st District until now.  The 54th District will include the western part of Effingham County, including the City of Effingham.

Republican Dale Righter was re-elected without opposition to the 55th District Senate seat, which will include the eastern part of Effingham County.

State Representatives John Cavaletto of Salem and David Reis of Ste. Marie were re-elected without opposition and will represent Effingham County in the House.  Cavaletto has not previously represented any of Effingham County, but will represent the City of Effingham and the western part of the county in the 107th District, while Reis will represent the eastern part of the county in the 109th District.

Meanwhile, Republican incumbent John Shimkus won re-election to Congress from the new 15th District, defeating Democrat Angela Michael.  Shimkus has represented the 19th District, but redistricting eliminated one House seat in Illinois.  Shimkus will still represent Effingham County in Congress.
