Today is the day for a memorial service for 2nd Lt. Charles "Butch" Moritz, the Effingham man who was killed in a plane crash during a training flight in England on the day after D-Day in 1944.
The memorial service will be held at 1pm at Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham, and the ceremony is open to the public. The ceremony will include full military honors.
Lt. Moritz's remains and the wreckage of his plane were discovered last September by a private group of vintage aircraft enthusiasts. The group members were actually looking for the wreckage of the plane that collided with Moritz and found Lt. Moritz and his plane. The remains were positively identified earlier this year.
