School boards at Effingham, Altamont and Dieterich are to vote Monday on whether to put a countywide sales tax question on the April election ballot.

The Effingham Unit 40 board will meet at 5pm Monday at the Unit offices on South Banker to consider whether to seek a vote on the question. A discussion of the district's infrastructure is also scheduled.

The Altamont Unit 10 and Dieterich Unit 30 boards will meet Monday for their regular monthly meetings and consideration of a sales tax is on the agendas.

Dieterich Superintendent Cary Jackson said all of the boards will be asked to consider placing the item on the ballot to insure that at least 51% of the population is seeking a vote on the issue.

The sales tax would be 1% and would have the exemptions of other sales taxes. The proceeds from a sales tax could be used solely for new construction or renovation of existing school facilities. Supporters of the initiative say much of the revenue would come from shoppers who live outside Effingham County.
