If you live in the state, it's no surprise, but the fact that Illinois is as high up the tax-ladder as it is, might be. The Tax Foundation reports that Illinois residents carry one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.

Their most recent study of 2010, ranks the state 11th nationally, down from 8th place a year before. While that's slightly better, Illinois still carries an average ten-point-two-percent tax rate, just above the national average at nine-point-nine.
