Stew-Stras school board members Thursday heard good news from their auditor; the district is in sound financial shape.

Kent Kull of Mose, Lively, Yockey and Kull of Shelbyville said the district's fund balances are solid.

The Board renewed property/casualty, liability and workers compensation insurance coverage and got the same coverage for a 4% lower premium.  Board members also discussed whether to pursue a referendum that, if approved, would increase the tax rate for the education fund.  Superintendent Steve Harsy said they'd review the projections at the Board's November meeting.

The Board discussed creating a teacher spotlight and highlighting the district's positive programs, and heard that the district's elementary scores for No Child Left Behind were very successful.  Harsy said there were only 10 districts in Illinois that made Adequate Yearly Progress at the high school level.

Board members discussed further construction projects, including replacing classroom unit ventilators, replacement of sensors at entrances and elsewhere, and discussed a grant request for an elementary school fire alarm upgrade.

Stew-Stras board members also hired Colby Rothrock as the assistant high school boys basketball coach.
