The leaves are changing color along the trees lining the TREC Trail in Effingham, making it the perfect time for a family trail walk.

TREC, Trails Recreation Effingham County, invites area residents to join in the fun at TREC’s Family Night Walk. The walk will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 20 in the parking lot at the Effingham Performance Center. From there, participants will walk to the TREC Trail.

“Across the Midwest, evening trail walks have become very popular,” said TREC Chairman Frank Brummer. “It is a good opportunity for families to spend time together and a good way to exercise.”

Brummer added the night walk also gives residents who want to learn more about the trail an opportunity to participate in a guided walk to become more familiar with the trail and how to access it.

“People are excited about the trail, and they want to know where to go. This is a good way to introduce them to the trail,” said Brummer.

The mission of Trails Recreation Effingham County (TREC) is to develop a countywide, multi-use trail system. The first phase of the ongoing project was completed in the fall of 2010, when TREC opened the Calico Trail, on the west edge of Effingham.
