A Watson man was arrested over the weekend on a series of charges.

An Effingham County sheriff's deputy was traveling north on US 45 at Illinois 37 shortly before 6pm Saturday. The deputy observed a pickup truck stopped on the roadway. The deputy said the vehicle then accelerated rapidly, smoking and squealing its tires heading south.

The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on the truck, but the driver failed to stop. The vehicle fled west on Illinois 37 into Watson, and exited off the highway onto Main Street. When the truck crossed the CN Railroad tracks, the driver lost control of the truck, which went airborne and ran over several mailboxes along Main Street. The vehicle came to rest about two blocks west of the railroad tracks and the driver fled on foot.

The driver, who was not injured in the incident, was apprehended a short time later and was arrested. The driver was identified as 31-year-old William E. Wolf. Wolf was arrested on counts including DUI, obstructing a peace officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer, illegal squealing of tires, speeding, driving in the wrong lane, no insurance, driving on a revoked license, and failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.

Wolf was taken to Effingham County Jail.
