A homeless man was arrested in Altamont over the weekend on methamphetamine charges.

(DAVID MATHES)

33-year-old David E. H. Mathes was taken into custody early Friday morning following a traffic stop. Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens said a small quantity of meth was found in the vehicle. Heiens said police then obtained a search warrant to look in Mathes' room at the Altamont Motel and found more of the substance.

In court Monday, Mathes was formally charged with a Class 1 felony count of delivery of five to 15 grams of methamphetamine. Heiens said the substance in question is crystal meth, not the methamphetamine that is typically manufacturing in this area. He said they're working to determine the source of the crystal meth. He said the quantity of meth found is worth around $3,000.

A Class 1 felony is punishable by up to four to 15 years in prison.

Mathes is next due in court on July 26. He is being held in Effingham County Jail on $75,000 bond.
