Firefighters from a number of area companies were called Thursday afternoon to handle a hay barn fire north of Lillyville.

Sigel firefighters were first called to the scene at the home of Jerry Vogt around 1:30pm.  Sigel Fire Chief Troy Althoff said the fire was bumped to a full still right away.  Upon arrival, the structure was a fully involved barn that had roughly 80 of the big bales of hay and straw.  Althoff said that with such a big fire load, he bumped the call to the box level.

The fire was under control in about a half-hour; a high hoe was brought in to remove the building from around the pile of hay.

Fire companies assisted Sigel from Montrose, Teutopolis, Dieterich, Shumway, Lincoln Fire Protection District, Neoga, and the MABAS 54 air truck, and Effingham firefighters covered the Sigel station in case of another fire call.  Red Cross from both Effingham and Cumberland counties was on scene providing drinks for the fire personnel.

Sigel firefighters cleared the scene around 7:30pm.
