It takes a real man to wear pink, and that’s what the real men of the area are doing on Fridays during October to show their support for the women in their lives.
St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Wellness is calling all men to join in their Third Annual “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign in October. The “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign is designed to encourage men to remind the women in their lives to get their annual mammograms. Men from throughout the area are encouraged to wear pink on Fridays during October to help spread the word about the importance of detecting breast cancer early. In addition, staff from St. Anthony’s will be distributing information on the hospital’s Women’s Wellness Center’s digital mammography at events throughout the month, including St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Event on October 25 at the Keller Convention Center.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. One out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. However, early detection of breast cancer saves thousands of lives each year.
“Encouraging women to get their annual mammogram is a great way for men to join in the fight against breast cancer. The only issue that makes the phenomenal difference in the outcome of this terrible disease is early detection. By having their annual mammogram, women can increase their chances of surviving breast cancer,” said Ruben Boyajian, MD, Medical Director of St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness and Cancer Care Services.
Women are encouraged to schedule their mammograms during the month of October in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All women who have their mammogram at St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Center in October will receive a free gift.
For those who call or visit St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Center in October to schedule their mammogram, they will be entered in a drawing for a gift basket. For those who have already scheduled their mammogram for a different month, just call St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness to confirm your appointment to be entered in the drawing. St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Center is located in the Effingham Medical Center at 900 West Temple Avenue, Suite 108. To schedule your mammogram, call 217-347-1601.
