Effingham Noon Club Rotarians heard from Effingham Child Development Center Director Shelli Dent about the Center and its operation at their meeting September 26.

Dent, who has served as Director of the Center for nine years, said there are 137 children enrolled at the Center and there are 65 children present at any given time.  The Center, which is located along Holly Drive, is open from 5:45am to 6pm and serves children preschool through age 13.

Dent said the Center primarily serves the children of people who are working or going to school.  She said the State Department of Human Services is the principal funding source for the Center, with some private pay clients and DCFS contributions making up the balance.  Dent terms the Center a "hand up, not a handout."

Dent also presented a list of needs that Rotarians could fill.  You can contact the Center if you'd like to help.

Jennifer Jansen served as Rotary weekly program chairman and introduced Dent.

The Rotary weekly student guest was Carly Andrews, the daughter of Chris and Michelle Andrews and a senior at St. Anthony High School.

Noon Club Rotarians also voted to support the replacement of a pavilion at Community Park.  The project, estimated to cost more than $32,000, would replace the farthest east pavilion along Temple Avenue with a pavilion more to the south past the playground equipment in that area of Community Park.  At that location, the pavilion would be much closer to the bulk of the parking in that portion of the park.  The Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club has agreed to partner in the project along with the Effingham Park District.
