The Effingham County Sheriff's Office has hired John Long as a fulltime sheriff's deputy.

Long will replace the Effingham County deputy that will be assigned to the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force. Long's salary will be supplemented by a grant from the Task Force.

(JOHN LONG)

Long was born and raised in Effingham. He graduated from Effingham High School in 1989 and joined the US Army shortly afterward. Long spent 20 years as an active duty member of both the US Army and the US Army National Guard. During that time, he served overseas in the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired as a recruiter for the National Guard in January 2015.

Long has worked in law enforcement in Effingham County, both fulltime and part-time, for the last 16 years. He has recently been employed part-time with both the Effingham County Sheriff's Department and the Effingham City Police Department.

John and his wife, Lisa, reside in Effingham. Together, they have three children: Hailey, Alyssa and Carter. When he's not working, Long enjoys spending time with his two grandchildren, Julian and August.
