A meeting will be held in the first part of October involving school officials from the Stewardson-Strasburg and Windsor school districts. The goal is to consider areas where the two districts could cooperate, and both academics and athletics will be considered.
Stew-Stras Superintendent Steve Harsy Friday said the meeting will involve Harsy and Windsor Superintendent Sharon Keck as well as the building principals and athletic directors of the two districts.
Harsy said schools are tasked with providing the best educational experience for every student, now and in the future. Reduced funding from the State is one reason the districts will look at whether they could do more with less through cooperating.
A community informational meeting has been scheduled to get school districts residents up to date on the process. The meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, October 16 in the new elementary gym and will present cooperative information on both academics and athletics.
In other business, the Stew-Stras board Thursday finalized the budget for the fiscal year. The measure calls for a balance of $1.1 million in all funds, including $800,000 in the operations fund.
There was also action on personnel matters; Brenda Jordan's resignation as a part-time cook was accepted and Kathy Bartels was hired to replace her...Jason Newkirk was hired as assistant junior high boys basketball coach...Jacob Haegen was hired as 5th and 6th grade basketball coach...and John King and Paula Antrim were hired as substitute bus drivers.
There was some discussion about moving school board meetings from Thursday to Wednesday nights, but board members did not favor the switch. Harsy said the matter will be revisited after the April school board election.
