A 16-year old girl is dead after she was shot Sunday evening on Effingham's south side.

Police report 16-year old Kaylee Jacob was shot in the 3200 block of South Banker Street at about 6:15 pm Sunday evening. Jacob was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital and later pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, with preliminary results expected Tuesday.

Funeral arragements for Jacob are located here.

A report from police Monday morning states that a 16-year old male was handling a handgun when the victim was believed to have been shot. The handgun used had been previously reported to the Effingham County Sheriff's Department as being stolen.

Two male juveniles are in police custody as a result of the incident.

Monday afternoon, Effingham Unit 40 Superintendent Mark Doan released the following statement regarding Jacob, who was a student at Effingham High School:

The entire Unit #40 family is extremely saddened by the passing of Effingham High School student, Kaylee Jacob. We want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for Kaylee.

The safety and social well-being of our students is a priority at Unit #40. We implemented our Crisis Intervention Team beginning Monday, October 19, 2015 at EHS. We will continue with this team in place to support both our students and staff until a determination is made to discontinue. For many of our students school provides a routine that they appreciate. Therefore, the District is trying to provide a sense of normalcy, but also allowing students to share their feelings in a safe and supporting environment. The District feels the grief process is best addressed in the home by parents but wish to be an active partner in providing our students the support they may need.

We ask that everyone please keep all of those involved in their thoughts as information continues to be released. This tragedy affects not only the families but also the school and local community. We continue to ask for everyone's prayers for Kaylee and her family as we move forward. Thank you."

The Effingham Police Department, Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, Effingham County State's Attorney's office and the Effingham and Fayette County Coroner's offices are continuing a joint investigation into the shooting.
