Fire did major damage Tuesday afternoon to the home of Steve Cornell north of Montrose.
Montrose firefighters were called to Cornell's home at 525 North 300th, about a half-mile east of the Montrose Blacktop, about 3pm.
Montrose Fire Chief Chris Overbeck said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but Cornell said he was fixing a meal in the kitchen when he became dizzy and passed out. When he came to, he said there were flames in the kitchen. Cornell, who had one leg amputated about a year ago, crawled to his bedroom where he put on his prosthesis and got out of the house unharmed. His son, Seth, who was at work is the only person who lives in the house.
Fire companies from Teutopolis, Sigel, Neoga and Toledo assisted Montrose firefighters at the scene while fire companies from Effingham and Watson staffed the Montrose station.
Firefighters were on scene into the evening hours.
