St. Elmo schools were briefly on lockdown status Friday morning.

St. Elmo Superintendent Deb Philpot reported a student said as he entered the junior/senior high school building that another student possibly brought a gun to school. Philpot said the schools immediately went on a high level of lockdown status to ensure that students were safe while officials were determining if the claim about a gun was true.

After a brief period of investigation and searches, officials determined the claim was false and the student eventually admitted that the story was false. Philpot said all students are safe, the lockdown was over by about 9:15am, and the school day proceeded as usual.
