Six Illinois 4-H members were recognized as 4-H Legacy of Leadership scholars during the annual 4-H Family Event at the Illinois State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 11.

The statewide scholarship program is coordinated by the Illinois 4-H Foundation and the University of Illinois Extension State 4-H Office. More than 25,000 young people are members of a local 4-H program.

Ellen Schumacher, a nine-year member of the T-Town Wranglers and the Effingham County 4- H Youth Ambassadors received a $1,000 college scholarship during the evening’s program. She is the 17-year old daughter of Maurus and Jill Schumaker of Teutopolis. She plans to attend Illinois State University in Marketing.

Schumacher was also named as the 2012 Effingham County Jeff Brooks $500 scholarship winner.  Jeff Brooks made a very significant contribution to Effingham County during his service as youth advisor from 1957 to 1970. His life ended on Jan. 4, 1996 after an extended bout with cancer. The scholarship was presented on Aug. 8 during the Effingham County 4-H Show in Altamont.

In her application, Schumacher said “4-H has definitely taught me to have a love of community service and taught me leadership skills. Community service has been and continues to be a huge part of my life. I enjoy performing service. There is nothing better than the feeling of helping others and knowing that I can make a difference in just one person’s life or leave a mark on the whole community."
