Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police officers (CPOs) continue to investigate an accident on Carlyle Lake that took the lives of two boaters on Saturday.
The bodies of both victims have been recovered following an extensive search effort that included personnel from the Illinois Conservation Police, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rangers, Keyesport Fire and Rescue, and Clinton County emergency personnel.
The body of one of the accident victims was recovered just before 8:00 a.m. on Monday, less than two miles north of the initial accident location. The body of the other victim was recovered at 7:00 a.m. today by Keyesport Fire Department personnel approximately two miles south of the initial accident location.
CPOs arrived at Carlyle Lake on Saturday at approximately 9:00 p.m. after an emergency call was placed to local law enforcement. CPOs immediately began searching the shorelines as well as the lake with sonar equipment at the location where the men reportedly went into the water.
Preliminary reports indicate that neither victim was wearing a life jacket when they entered the water.
The identification of the accident victims is being handled by the Clinton County Coroner’s Office as the Illinois Conservation Police investigation continues.
