The Effingham County Board Monday approved a contract with the Teamsters Union local representing maintenance workers in the Effingham County Highway Department.

County Engineer Greg Koester said the two-year agreement is retroactive to the start of the county fiscal year on December 1, 2011 and includes 1-1/2% pay hike for the first year of the agreement, and a 2% hike the second year.

Koester said the contract includes a two-tier wage system so that new hires will not automatically be paid at the same rate as established workers.  Agreement was also reached on language concerning health insurance.

Eight employees are covered by the contract.
