Businessman Bruce Rauner will get the opportunity to see whether his success in the marketplace will serve him well in the political world.

Rauner defeated incumbent Pat Quinn Tuesday and will take office in January as the next governor of Illinois.

Rauner had a sizable early lead, but the margin shrank to about 19,000 votes about 10pm before swelling to some 150,000 votes by the time the count reached its conclusion.

Rauner's campaign slogan of "Shake Up Springfield. Bring Back Illinois" seemed to resound with voters tired of gridlock in Springfield.

Also Tuesday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin was elected to a fourth term, a record in Illinois, with a victory over Jim Oberweis.
