A local apartment building was evacuated briefly early Monday morning due to smoke in the building.

Effingham firefighters were called to a building owned by Larry Quicksall at 120 Illini Drive. The call came around 5:30am.

A resident of the building was awakened by the smell of smoke and found a chair on the upstairs landing smoldering. Residents were evacuated until smoke could be cleared from the building. No structural damage occurred.

Firefighters are investigating whether smoke detectors in that part of the building sounded properly.

No one was injured. Occupants were allowed to return to the building about 6:15am.
