The Effingham County Sheriff's Department said today the driver of a vehicle that struck a man on the Teutopolis/Elliotstown Blacktop is a Sigel man.

Sheriff's deputies and Effingham City-County Ambulance Service were called to the scene just south of 1000th Avenue at 11:18pm due to a report of a man laying on the roadway. The man, 19-year-old Cody Michels of Dieterich, was bleeding and was struck by a vehicle.

Effingham County Sheriff John Monnet today said the vehicle that struck Michels was driven by 30-year-old Michael Martin of Sigel. Authorities say Martin stopped and stayed at the scene after the incident.

Authorities are still attempting to determine why Michels was in the roadway. Sheriff Monnet said the investigation into the incident is continuing. No citations have been issued.

Michels was airlifted from the scene to be taken for treatment.
