Jasper school board members Monday heard that 1,396 students are enrolled in the district in Grades Pre-K through 12.

The Board also heard about temporary repairs made to the sidewalks at Newton Elementary School. Permanent repairs will be made either at Christmas break or immediately following the end of the school year.

Board members authorized Superintendent Dan Cox to begin writing Health and Life Safety amendments. The district will seek approval of the plans to make repairs at Newton Community High School. The Board will hold a special meeting on September 4 to consider options for health and life safety work and bonds to finance the work. It was agreed to hire Stifel-Nicolas to provide bond underwriting services for the District.

The Board also received an update on Math curriculum work completed by staff members over the past year and during this past summer, and declared the former football scoreboard at Chizevsky Field as surplus, to be sold through a recycler or donated to the For the Kids Foundation.

In personnel moves, the Jasper board accepted the resignation of teacher Lori Dion and thanked her for her years of work in Music for the district, accepted the retirement of Deena Brown as of December 15 with thanks for her work at Newton Elementary School, approved Eric Carr as volunteer high school soccer coach and Ross Wolf as volunteer high school football coach, approved the hiring of paraprofessionals Rebecca Oldham, Gina Niemerg and Joni Milliman, and hired Tara Gallion as music and chorus teacher at Newton Elementary and Jasper County Junior High.
