The case of a local man charged with striking a flagger in a local construction zone is to go trial in October.
20-year-old Zane Smart of Strasburg is charged with a felony count of being responsible for an accident that resulted in injury or death. The charge stems from an incident earlier this summer when Smart's vehicle allegedly struck a flagger working on a construction project along North US 45 north of Technology Drive and then leaving the scene. At one point, Smart considered entering a negotiated plea but during the hearing changed his mind and asked for appointment of legal counsel instead.
During a hearing this week, Smart was scheduled to go on trial October 16, with a pre-trial hearing set for September 18.
The flagger was injured in the incident, but declined treatment.
