An inmate at Effingham County Jail attempted suicide early Thursday morning, but two correctional officers and a deputy cut the man down in time to prevent serious injury.

29-year-old James Meyer was found by Correctional Officer Arnold Rexroad hanging by a bedsheet in his cell just after midnight. Rexroad and Correctional Officer Siara Brockett were assisted by Deputy Travis Buhnerkempe in cutting Meyer down and preventing serious injury.

Meyer has been in jail since early June on drug charges.

Rexroad was conducting a cell check a few minutes ahead of the every half-hour schedule, and found Meyer in time.
