Jobless Figures for June Much Improved from Year Earlier

Unemployment figures in area counties for June are much improved from one year earlier.

Effingham County's June jobless rate was 5.7%, down from 7.4% in June 2013.

Other area counties, and their rates:

Coles--7.2%, down from 9.6%

Cumberland--7.1%, down from 8.9%

Shelby--7.0%, down from 9.1%

Clay--8.7%, down from 10.5%

Fayette--8.5%, down from 10.0%

Jasper--6.9%, down from 8.6%

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said unemployment decreased in all 18 counties in south central Illinois when compared to one year ago.

Seasonal employment gains occurred in construction and recreation. Employment advances were reported in wholesale trade, retail trade, and financial activities. Payroll increases continued in health care services, food services and transportation throughout the area.

Employment opportunities were considerable in transportation, sales and healthcare. Numerous job openings were also reported in office and administrative support, food services and production occupations. Advertisements for employment included jobs in business and finance, construction, and computer services.
