Effingham's local solid waste landfill has six years of capacity remaining.

The Illinois EPA has released the Illinois Landfill Projections of Disposal Capacity Report for 2013. The report includes capacity remaining at landfills throughout Illinois as of January 1, 2014.

Landfill 33 in Effingham has almost 1.7 million tons of space remaining. The years of usable space, as estimated by the landfill, is six years, and the landfill's estimated closing date is June 2020.

Statewide, the current remaining landfill life expectancy in Illinois is 21 years.

The usable life figures can vary year-to-year as cells in landfills are filled and others are developed.
