Effingham Water Authority trustees discussed beefing up recreational areas at Lake Sara at this week's meeting.

Trustee Jim Boos recommended Lake Superintendent Mike Dirks explore adding a couple of docks near the Pearson Building so boaters would be able to gain access to the beach for swimming and picnics. The idea was floated at the Water Authority's previous meeting.

Brian Larson, who operates The Marina at Lake Sara, said he has noticed more activity at the beach this year and thinks additional docks is a great idea.

Tom Ryan, on behalf of the Water Authority's Park and Recreation Committee, submitted a recommendation for funding sources for the Board to consider. Ryan agreed to draft a letter to be sent to commercial and residential leaseholders to obtain feedback on possible uses for the beach and peninsula area.

Meanwhile, Frank and Deb Votava, who own Lot 2 Safety Harbor Subdivision, stated the property next to them has become very unsightly, with pieces of wood, debris, signs and old boats on the parcel. The Votavas presented numerous pictures to the Board. Water Authority Attorney Tony Siemer said he would contact the owner of the property to see if it can be cleaned.

Also, trustees discussed purchasing a new patrol boat. Dirks will work on specs and said bids will be obtained prior to the end of the year. The Board also awarded a bid to Heuerman Brothers for gravel to be used for road maintenance.

In a separate special meeting, the Water Authority Board chose Trustee Rob Brown to serve as chairman, James Boos as vice chairman and treasurer, and Chris Kabbes as secretary. The Board also approved 2% raises for personnel and rehiring Lake Superintendent Mike Dirks, Office Manager Betty Logan, and Attorneys Siemer, Austin and Fuhr.
