There's good news and there's bad news regarding the Effingham County Fair that opens Friday.

First, the bad news.

Fair officials got word today that the carnival will not be in place until Monday night of this year's event.  The carnival was supposed to be in place for opening night of the fair this Friday night.

Fair Board President Phil Hartke said because of the hot weather, the carnival had workers quitting on them.  To insure an adequate crew of workers, the carnival won't be able to set up in time and will not be ready to operate until Monday night.

Now, the good news.

Local fair broadcaster Kurt Becker today said there are few other county fairs in Illinois that will be offering harness or running races during the coming week.  Becker said that's an indication that horsemen will be looking for a place to run their horses so good fields should be on hand for the local fair.

Harness racing at the fair begins on Sunday and continues through Thursday, with quarter horse and thoroughbred racing on Friday.  A reminder that you can hear the races live on our stations; Sunday at 1pm on 979XFM, Monday through Friday on KJ Country 102.3 at 1pm on Monday through Thursday and at noon on Friday.
