One of the members of the US Summer Olympic team has local ties.
Matt Tegenkamp, who will run Saturday in the 10,000 meter race is the great-nephew of Ramona Dirks of Effingham.
The 30-year-old Tegenkamp is the grandson of Ramona's brother, Jerry Tegenkamp of Normal. Jerry is a graduate of St. Anthony High School in Effingham.
Ramona said Matt also competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and finished 13th in the 5,000 meter race. She said he runs 95 miles a week.
Ramona said Matt grew up in the Kansas City area and lives in Portland, Oregon. She said he finished second in the 10,000 meter qualifying earlier this month. She also said this will likely be his last Olympics, as his wife is expecting their second child and it's probably time to focus on his family.
Matt is also the great-nephew of Dorothy Levitt of Effingham.
The 10,000 meter race is scheduled to air at 3:15pm Saturday, Effingham time, on NBC.
